A browser golf course is a house
If every hole is a straight ribbon to a flag, you do not have a course. You have a loading bar with grass texture.
Lattice Golf is a free HTML5 game on this site. No account. A local scorecard. Named nines that are supposed to be club puzzles, and an endless walk that is supposed to be mean. I care about that the way I care about a homepage: architecture first, decoration second.
A good hole has a place you are allowed to land and a place that punishes greed. Water that you must actually carry. Trees that stop a cut. A gold marker that is not the pin, because the first shot is often to a corner, not a highlight reel. If 100% driver flies the elbow into pines, that is the lesson. Wrong club is bunkers, trees, or a drop. I would rather a player be slightly angry than slightly bored.
Power is a range, not four buttons
For a long time the game offered 25, 50, 75, 100. That is a toy piano. Real courses need the notes in between: 63% to sit short of water, 81% to cover a bunker without finding the one behind the green. The full power bar is that piano. It shows this club’s minimum and maximum yards. A gold pip sits on the aim line where this power lands. Arrows nudge one percent. Shift plus arrows, five. The old snaps are still there if you want a square meal. Complexity is the fun. Basic holes are a shrug.
People in the corner
You can pick a golfer on the title screen. Mira, Sancora, Lyra, Reed, Calder, Kai. Portraits without clubs in hand, because a strange extra limb is not character, it is a glitch with a costume. The plate sits bottom-left so you remember you are walking with someone. Radio sits in the how-to-play bar so it does not cover the fairway. Those are hospitality choices. They are also why a free game can still feel like a room instead of a pop-up.
What I will not ship
A putter that oscillates forever because the cup was smaller than the physics. A menu whose title is buried under an opaque fade. Duplicate donate rows. A driver that ignores the woods because collision only ran on landing. We fixed those by playing the game like a stranger. Verification is not a screenshot. Verification is holing out, then trying to be greedy, then watching the ball stop in the trees you aimed through.
If you want a quiet hour, open Pine Haven or Coral Lattice, plant the marker on the next landing, and leave without a speech. The lantern rule works on a fairway too.
