Empty beats fake
I would rather show you a blank pin than a beautiful lie. That is not branding. It is how you keep a library from rotting.
There is a sentence I repeat until it sounds like a proverb: empty beats fake. It started as a rule for maps. It leaked into music. Then into the way I talk about work I have not finished. Once you see it, you see it everywhere — dashboards that invent “live” numbers, playlists that pad themselves with ghosts, biographies that skip the years that were quiet.
Empty is honest. Fake is a kind of theft. It steals the moment when a person could have known the truth and gone looking.
On a globe
The Public Witness page draws Earth from public feeds: earthquakes, storms, a satellite, headlines that agencies already published. If a feed fails, the node stays named. We do not paint a quake where the GET timed out. We do not write a storm because the composition needed drama. A hollow ring means: this room exists, we will not steal its interior, here are the public doors around it.
People who grew up on cinematic “god’s eye” toys find this disappointing. Good. Disappointment is information. A map that is always full is a map that is lying some of the time.
A dashboard that is always full is a dashboard that is lying some of the time.
The event ledger on that page is a public log of what we actually fetched. It is not a secret intelligence file. It is not the Star Chart. Dual ledgers stay canon. Headlines stay reference. Mixing those two is how you get a cult of dashboards.
In a catalog
I have released a lot of music. Some of it streams. Some of it is a hash in a vault waiting for a listener who wants that exact file. The listen portal will show you a title that exists. It will not invent a radio hit to make the list look healthier. Dead links get named as misses. That is rude to the part of the brain that wants a seamless product. It is polite to the part that might spend an hour chasing a song that was never there.
The same rule applies to LYGO TV. If a channel is blocked in the browser, we say it is blocked. We do not hide the miss behind a proxy that launders someone else’s stream. Empty beats pirate, too.
In a story
Writers fake in prettier ways. We imply a research trip we did not take. We put a seal on a chapter because the lore wanted symmetry. Eternal Haven’s books are mythic; myth is allowed to be larger than a receipt. What it is not allowed to do is claim a public fact it does not have. If a character walks through a storm, that is fiction. If I tell you a real flood happened last Tuesday, I owe you a link.
The discipline is the same muscle. Ask: do I have this, or do I want this? If I only want it, the page stays empty or the sentence stays fictional on purpose, labeled as such.
A small practice
- When a tool fails, write “named miss” instead of retrying until you hallucinate success.
- When a number is approximate, say so in the same breath as the number.
- When you have not listened to your own catalog in a month, do not call it a living scene. Call it a library. Libraries are allowed to be quiet.
- When someone asks for private intel, give them public doors or give them nothing.
I fail this practice. Then I come back to it. The lantern stays on because the rooms inside it are allowed to be unfinished. Unfinished is empty. Pretend-finished is fake. I know which one I can live with in the morning.
