Ads and a house that still opens

I would rather a stranger finish an essay than fund a page that has nothing on it but a rectangle waiting for a network.

Advertising networks are blunt instruments. They look at a domain and ask: is there unique writing, a human publisher, a way to contact someone, a privacy policy that is not three sentences, and a first page that is not a pile of doors to somewhere else? If the answer is no, they call it low value. Sometimes that is unfair. Sometimes it is a mirror.

Eternal Haven had essays. It also had a homepage that still behaved like a systems directory, a privacy page that was a stub, and too many interior maps in the top navigation for a guest who only wanted a chapter. That is on me. This week I am putting furniture in the rooms that should have had furniture: about, books, music, contact, a real privacy policy, terms, and new essays that could only have been written here.

Where an ad is allowed to sit

After a reader has been given something. Not on the contact page. Not as the first object in the hero. Optional. Labeled. The same rule as a magazine card: you already paid with your time; the rectangle is not the product. Support without ads remains PayPal.me/ExcavationPro and Patreon. A gift does not buy a different story.

What I will not do to “pass”

I will not generate fifty fake articles about “best VPNs.” I will not hide the games. I will not copy another site’s posts. I will not stuff keywords until the sentences die. I will not claim a review I cannot request yet. Calendars are calendars. The work is the work. If a reviewer arrives in September, they should find a house: original pages, labeled doors, a human with a name, and a lantern that does not require a login.

Thin content is a hospitality failure. Thick content that is only jargon is a different failure. The middle path is this: write like a person, keep the maps one click away, and let a stranger leave without a speech. That is the same ethic as the listen portal and the golf course. It is the only ethic that makes ads tolerable in a library.
